Chicken Keeping Courses in Norfolk

Jen Burgess Experience in Keeping ChickensWe have been breeding and keeping chickens on our small farm for 5 years now and before we started I had memories of having chickens in my childhood. In spite of my rose tinted memories when we collected our first chickens everything seemed very complicated and confusing. Before we got our hens we read a ridiculous number of books and if anything the effect was to confuse me about something I had remembered as being very natural and simple. With the help of an elderly friend who had been keeping chickens for twice as long as I had been alive, we found our own simple way of managing our flock. We now breed hundreds of birds each year and we don't like to sell birds to people until we are sure they can catch and examine their hens and are not afraid of them. Over the last few years i have found that people need more time to be sure of what they are doing and to learn how to care for their birds and to feel secure handling them. People want to know so much more than I can get across in half an hour when they buy their hens. My knowledge comes from running a pure breed farm with well over 500 birds at many times of year, from being able to recognise problems as they develop and from a combination of very old fashioned knowledge, combined with some very modern treatments ( from our wonderful commercial poultry vet). I used to be a teacher and i still work with schools locally to support their science curriculum. I also give local talks and information days and for the last 3 years people have been asking me to produce a pamphlet and run a course to teach the basics of handling, good husbandry and health care. So by popular demand, after some trial runs last year we are offering courses this year. Chicken Keeping Course InformationCourses run on Saturdays and Sundays from March.
