The Poultry Book

Just click the images to pop up the full size version.

These pictures were taken from a downloaded copy of The Poultry Book by W. B. Tegetmeier, F. Z. S.; with colour illustrations by Harrison Weir Published in 1867, it is subtitled "Comprising the breeding and management of profitable and ornamental poultry; their qualities and characteristics."

One curiosity of reading these old books is the changes that have happened to spelling - The Sebastopol Geese for example. The accepted spelling today being Sevastopol but the spelling with a b has stuck for the geese.

Sebastopol Geese
Sebastopol (Sevastopol) Geese

"Amongst the geese there were two curious specimens from Sebastopol, exhibited by Mr T H D Bayly. These birds are somewhat smaller than those of this country at a mature size, but they are of the purest white and the most perfect form, whilst the most conspicuous portion of their plumage is of a curly nature, affording a very striking contrast to the feathers of the ordinary English goose."

Frizzled Fowls
Frizzled Fowls

"In a large collection of the domesticated birds of nearly every country in the world, formed by Mr C. Darwin, and placed at our service, many specimens occur with recurved feathers, some like Malays, with short frizzled hackles, and others with the peculiar plumage passing over the entire body."

Yes, it was Charles Darwin, author of Origin of Species, who was a friend of the author of this work

French Hens
Crevecoeur Chickens

These were popular in France at this time as a meat bird. They look quite similar to the Polish breeds with a distinct bonnet.

The only thing I don't like about them is the strange red horns they appear to have. Make them look quite demonic!
